Match #1 - WCW World Tag Team Championship - The Darkside - Wrath & Mortis (Champions) vs. The Horsemen - Dean Malenko & Perry Saturn[We cut to the ring, where David Penzer is standing alongside Garth Brooks. Penzer introduces Brooks, who proceeds to sing the National Anthem…
[FAST FORWARD THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER]
Brooks: O’er the LANNDD OF THE FREEEEEE…… And the HOOMMMEEE…. Of the…. BRAVVVEEEE!
Styles: And that was the national anthem, straight from the nation’s capital.
[Brooks soaks in the applause and cheers from the crowd for his performance, but the platitudes are cut short by the booming, ominous rock theme of The Darkside! The crowd ROCK in pure, unadulterated HEAT, which only grows louder when Jake Roberts appears on the Starrcade set (featuring replicas of D.C landmarks on either side of the giant Starrcade star, which splits in half and leads to the entrance ramp). ]
Penzer: Coming down the aisle, at a combined weight of 557 pounds, accompanied to the ring by their mentor Jake Roberts, they are the WCW World Tag Team Champions, representing The Darkside - WRATH and MMMMORRRTTIISSS!
[Roberts leads Wrath and Mortis, decked out in their most intimidating attire. Mortis wears a giant black trenchcoat, adorned with skulls on the shoulders, while Wrath wears a helmet – part Big Van Vader, part Demolition. Roberts smiles his most evil of smiles as he leads the two into the ring, where they disrobe and prepare for the match. Roberts jaws with Garth Brooks, who made a quick exit from the ring.]
Penzer: And their opponents…
[The crowd cheer instantly, knowing who will be entering soon. Suddenly, the sound of rustling horse feet comes over the P.A, and the crowd EXPLODE IN CHEERS!]
Penzer: Weighing in at a combined weight of 472 pounds, accompanied to the ring by ‘The Enforcer’ Arn Anderson, representing The Four Horsemen – Dean Malenko and Perrryyy SATTURRNNNN!
[The star parts, and Double A, Malenko and Saturn step onto the entrance ramp to huge cheers. They give the Four Horsemen symbol, and are met with ten-thousand or so in return from the crowd. Arn hangs at ringside, while Malenko and Saturn enter the ring, only to be mugged by Wrath, Mortis AND Roberts before the bell!]
Styles: And The Darkside get some quick shots in!
[This sneak attack prompts Arn to enter the fray himself, and he charges directly at Roberts, who holds his black cane above his head, ready to drop it on Saturn’s chest. Just before he can, Double A grabs him and drops him with a BONE-SHATTERING SPINEBUSTER!!]
Tenay: That’s what we want!
Heenan: That’s why they call him The Enforcer! Roberts is out of it!
[Referee Billy Silverman stops Arn from continuing his assault, and backs him out of the ring while The Darkside and Horsemen members brawl. When Arn has left the ring, Silverman calls for the bell. His problem of getting the four men to their respective corners is solved when Saturn clotheslines Mortis over the top rope. The crowd pop, and Malenko heads to his corner. The legal men are Saturn and Wrath.]
Tenay: Saturn and Wrath are the two biggest men on their teams, so you’ve got to imagine we’re going to be seeing these two match-up quite often.
Heenan: That’s a good point Tenay, I don’t think Dean Malenko is going to try and outwrestle Wrath. He’s just going to let Saturn hit him.
[Wrath has the immediate advantage after attacking Saturn from behind after the clothesline, and backs him into his corner. He gets off a few stiff punches and forearms, but Saturn is too fresh, and fights back with some rights of his own. Wrath staggers, and Saturn drops him with a leg sweep followed by a running elbow! Saturn tries to lift Wrath to his feet, but Wrath pushes him off, stands up and charges, only for Saturn to connect with a drop toe hold! Wrath’s head bounces off the bottom rope, but before Saturn can capitalize, Mortis attacks him from behind!]
Styles: Just as Saturn was building up some momentum, in comes Mortis!
[Silverman struggles to contain Mortis, but eventually sends him back to his corner. This gives Wrath time to recover, and he charges at Saturn, dropping him with a HUGE shoulderblock!]
Heenan: Saturn just can’t catch a break.
[Wrath stomps on Saturn’s back, then turns up the offense. He lifts the 250 pounder, then drops him with a fallaway slam! Saturn is thrown almost to the other end of the ring, as Wrath makes the tag. He grabs Saturn and lifts him up in a powerbomb position and waits for Mortis, showing off his strength. Mortis holds Saturn by the chest, then the two drop him. Saturn, however, doesn’t land on canvas – but on Mortis’ KNEE in a BRUTAL modified backbreaker!]
Styles: Jesus!
Tenay: A huge double-team, and we’re only two minutes in!
[Saturn holds his back in pain, as the Innovator of Offense dashes to the other end of the ring. When Saturn gets to his feet (still holding his back), Mortis meets him with a crisp superkick! Saturn falls, and Mortis makes the cover…
ONE!
TWO!
T-NO!]
Tenay: Saturn’s back may be hurt, but that was never going to be a pin-fall.
Heenan: Hey, you never know, he might have just given up.
Tenay: I don’t think Perry Saturn is a quitter, Brain.
Heenan: Well, he quit WCW didn’t he?
[Mortis rolls Saturn to his feet, and drops him with a regular backbreaker. He holds on, bending Saturn’s spine over his knee, and makes the tag at the same time. With Mortis still holding Saturn, Wrath runs the ropes and connects with a stiff elbow to Saturn’s neck.]
Styles: And with that, the Darkside are in complete control!
[Mortis helps Wrath pound on the fallen Horseman before heading to the ring apron, and now Wrath assumes control. He whips Saturn into the turnbuckle, charges and connects with a back elbow, then when Saturn staggers forward, drops him with a HUGE POWERSLAM!]
Heenan: He just sent Saturn to another solar system!
[Wrath makes the cover…
ONE!
TWO!
And lifts Saturn up!]
Tenay: He aborted the pin!
[At ringside, Jake Roberts is grinning maniacally, yelling a game plan to Wrath. Wrath grabs Saturn, and hooks him for the Meltdown!]
Styles: This could be it!
[Wrath nods at Roberts, lifts Saturn up, but Saturn breaks free mid-lift, and tries to hook Wrath into a T-Bone suplex! Wrath fights it off with an elbow, then meets Saturn with a BLISTERING CLOTHESLINE! An angry Wrath stomps on his opponent, who is dazed but slowly crawling towards his partner Malenko. Malenko reaches out as far as he can, but Wrath grabs Saturn by the legs, dragging him to the middle of the ring. He sits on Saturn’s back, hooks the arms and locks in a Camel Clutch!]
Heenan: Look at that, he locked that in right infront of Malenko! That’s mind games right there!
[Malenko and Anderson look concerned, as the already weakened back of Saturn is wrenched by Wrath’s monstrous frame. Referee Billy Silverman checks on Saturn, but he refuses to give up. After less than a minute, Wrath breaks the hold, then tags to Mortis.]
Tenay: What’s that, three tags from the tag team champions, and none from The Horsemen?
[Mortis lifts a wounded Saturn to his feet, then hooks him in a fisherman suplex position, spins and DROPS Saturn with a Swinging Fisherman!]
Styles: Mortis with a move he calls The End Of Days, and what an apt description!
[Mortis goes straight into a cover…
ONE!
TWO!
TH-NO NO NO!]
Tenay: Saturn kicks out!
[Mortis slaps the ring once, stands up, then gives his signal for The Flatliner!]
Styles: Well, if it wasn’t the End Of Days then, it might be now!
[Mortis lifts Saturn, stands face to face and hooks him in a Russian Leg Sweep, only for Saturn to struggle, break his leg free, hook it around Mortis and DROP HIM WITH A FLATLINER OF HIS OWN! The crowd pop, and Saturn slowly recovers!]
Tenay: And just like that, The Horsemen might be back in it!
[On his knees to take the pressure of his back, Saturn slowly…slowly crawls towards Malenko.
Malenko stretches his short frame….
Saturn reaches…
Malenko reaches….
Saturn reaches….
Malenko yells…..
WRATH BURSTS INTO THE CAMERA SHOT AND HAMMERS SATURN WITH A STIFF KNEE TO THE BACK!!]
Tenay: OH!
[Referee Billy Silverman earns his paycheck by hustling Wrath back to his corner, then by stopping Malenko from entering the ring. Mortis recovers, grabs Saturn and walks him to the Darkside corner. He tags in Wrath, then climbs the top rope. Referee Billy Silverman warns Malenko about interfering, as Wrath lifts Saturn onto his shoulders!]
Styles: Look at the strength of Wrath!
Tenay: And this looks very bad for Saturn!
[Mortis steadies himself on the top rope, but Saturn is struggling on Wrath’s shoulders! He connects with a few shots to Wrath’s head, spins his body and takes down Wrath with one of the least-elegant looking hurricanranas ever!!]
Styles: Perry Saturn busting out the lucha libre tonight!!
Tenay: I’ve seen everything!
[Wrath doesn’t just fall to the canvas, but INTO the ropes, CROTCHING Mortis on the top! The crowd’s cheers build, as Saturn crawls quickly to the opposite end of the ring, AND MAKES THE HOT TAG TO MALENKO!!]
Styles: And The Iceman Cometh!!
[Malenko doesn’t play the ‘Face On Fire’, instead using a methodical attack. When Wrath charges at him, he drops the 300-pounder with a drop toe hold, then connects with an ULTRA-stiff kick to the ribs!]
Styles: It’s Samoa Malenko!
Heenan: What?
[Mortis is still crotched on the top turnbuckle, so Malenko climbs up to meet him, nods for the crowd, and DROPS HIM WITH A TOP-ROPE BRAINBUSTER!!]
Tenay: I’ve never seen Malenko like this!
[Malenko recovers, looks at Mortis’ fallen body – then adjusts his wristbands to a surprisingly large pop. In one swift, fluid movement, he grabs Mortis’ legs, hooks them in and turns him over into the TEXAS CLOVERLEAF! The crowd go APE, and we can see the pain on Mortis face, even THROUGH his mask!!]
Styles: If Mortis taps, the Tag Team titles come home to WCW!!
Heenan: Look at him! He’s in agony!
[Referee Billy Silverman checks on Mortis, only to be
CLOCKED IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD WITH JAKE ROBERTS’ CANE! That sends the crowd into a FEVER pitch, which grows louder when Arn Anderson storms the ring! Anderson, however, is floored with a HUGE boot by Wrath, and there are bodies EVERYWHERE!]
Tenay: This is chaos!
Heenan: What did you expect?!
[Roberts doubles Malenko over with his cane, making the ‘Man of 1000 Holds’ easy pickings for a CITY-DESTROYING MELTDOWN from Wrath! This cavalcade of calamity doesn’t stop there, however. Wrath poses after the meltdown, only to be floored from behind by Saturn, who turns him around, and
DROPS THE BEHEMOTH WITH A LIGHTNING FAST T-BONE SUPLEX!!]
Styles: T-BONE FROM SATURN! THAT’S PAYBACK!
Tenay: Malenko’s down, Mortis is down, Wrath is down, the referee’s down! Who’s left?
[Tenay’s question is answered by our next camera shot. In one corner, Jake Roberts is checking on Wrath. In the other, Perry Saturn is helping Arn Anderson to his feet. The crowd see the scene, and start rocking. A few seconds later, Jake Roberts realises his predicament.]
Styles: And now look! The mentor of the Darkside, their demonic inspiration, is staring down TWO Horsemen!
Tenay: How long have we waited for THIS moment?
[Jake starts shuffling on the spot, desperately looking for an exit, as Arn and Saturn advance. Jake looks on in sheer terror, and now it’s Double A’s turn to grin. Roberts lifts his black cane, but Arn grabs his hand.]
Styles: Look at their faces! That’s pure hate right there! Pure conte-
[Styles is interrupted by the sight and sound of MORTIS DROPPING SATURN WITH A KANYON-CUTTER! This distracts Anderson, who turns around to check on Saturn, only to turn back and be met with
a BRUTAL SHOT TO THE HEAD FROM ROBERTS’ CANE! THE CANE SNAPS IN TWO OVER ARN’S FOREHEAD, AND DOUBLE A DROPS TO THE CANVAS!!]
Styles:
OH MY GOD!Heenan: He’s gone!
[Arn Anderson is motionless, and Roberts rolls himself out of the ring, away from the commotion. Right now, the only men moving are Mortis, and referee Billy Silverman. Mortis looks at the fallen bodies of Saturn and Malenko.]
Styles: I think the only question is, who is he going to pin to win this thing?
[Mortis chooses Malenko, and makes the cover on the former Cruiserweight Champ, only for Malenko to pull him down, AND ROLL HIM UP IN A SMALL PACKAGE!
ONE!
TWO!
THREE!!!
HORSEMAN WIN!
HORSEMAN WIN!]
Styles:
HE WAS PLAYING POSSUM! DEAN MALENKO AND PERRY SATURN ARE THE NEW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!![Malenko can’t celebrate immediately however, as Mortis gets to his feet at the same time. Mortis swings with a right hand, but Malenko ducks then clotheslines him over the top rope, for the second time this evening!]
Tenay: I can’t believe that ending! After all that, a roll-up, and The Horsemen bring home the Tag Team Titles!
Heenan: But at what cost? Look what Roberts did to The Enforcer!
[Just before Bobby finishes that sentence, we cut to a shot of Arn Anderson. His forehead is completely busted open, and the former Commissioner is still unconscious. Malenko checks on him, as does the now-standing Saturn. The look of concern on their faces trumps their triumph of winning, and they barely seem interested in grabbing the Tag Team Titles, held by the ref.]
Styles: Well, Arn Anderson is a tough guy, but… Let’s just cut to the Castrol VTX Replay…
