Would you drive to another state to batter your good friends with various sharp and blunt objects and to bleed all over the place, in front of a few hundred fans for a minor payday? Most people would say “no” without a second thought, but Indianapolis’ own Scotty Vortekz thinks otherwise. On Saturday, June 26th, Scotty traveled with his lifelong friend and wrestler Drake Younger to Townsend, Delaware to participate in Combat Zone Wrestling’s yearly Tournament of Death event. On this afternoon, Vortekz joined an elite field of eight for a seven match tournament that included men battering each other with fluorescent light bulb tubes, razor sharp barbed wire, thumbtacks, and the dreaded fans supplied weapons.
On his Facebook, Vortekz, real name Scott Thompson, describes himself as “a fun guy who is a little spontaneous”. What drives a fun guy to smash his friends into panes of tempered glass, boards covered in glass tubes, and smash his friends into light tubes tables, and ladders? This wasn’t Scotty’s first tournament for CZW, or for other companies. In the underground wrestling scene, Scotty and his stable mates in the Naptown Dragons Drake Younger and Kyle Threat regularly perform in these underground death matches, battering themselves and each other for mere pennies. As seen in the hit 2008 movie “The Wrestler”, these young men DO commonly batter themselves with glass, staple guns, and barbed wire.
Scotty competed in the first round of the tournament against long time friend Dysfunction. The two battered each other with panes of tempered glass and brutalized each other with vile kicks from thumb tack laden kick pads. Early in the match, Dysfunction injured his hand on a pane of glass, requiring medical attention during the match and bringing the match to an abrupt stop. Vortekz continued in the tournament, defeating Japanese star from Big Japan Pro Wrestling Masada in a boards of death match. In this match, the two used various boards covered in light tubes and barbed wire to try to incapacitate each other. Late in the match, Masada brought his signature cinder blocks into the match, using them several times within the match. Masada threw Scotty onto the blocks several times in brutal fashion.
In the final match of the night, the tournament finals, Vortekz faced long time rival JC Bailey. The two have faced off many times in many states, even right here in Indiana, all the way back in 2003 in a barefoot thumbtacks match. On this day, it was a light tubes, tables, and chairs match. After nearly twenty minutes of both men brutalizing each other, it was Scotty who came out on top, winning the match and the tournament.
These underground hardcore wrestlers make very little for what they do. They don’t enjoy great fame. They don’t see their faces on television every week and children don’t run to them for autographs at the mall. So what drives them to do what they do? What drives a man to agree to smash his friends with glass for the entertainment of others and a meager payday. In my next article, I will be interviewing Scotty and will be asking him this exact question among others. For today, I am the masked columnist, bidding you good day.
