Wrestlemania 2. The second in the annual Wrestlemania tradition. And a lackluster card top to bottom. This was at the height of the territories dying and Vince McMahon had access to pretty much any star he wanted, at this point. So why was King Kong Bundy, a lifetime mid carder at best, in the main event? Here, I will rewrite the events that happened on April 7th 1986 in Chicago, New York, and LA.
Main Event of LA
WWF Heavyweight title Match
Steel Cage Match
Hulk Hogan (c)
versus
Bruiser Brody w/ Bobby Heenan
The main feud of Wrestlemania 2. Hulk Hogan had been dominating for months, over a year, since he captured the WWF championship from the Iron Sheik. But a new comer had come on board with the WWF, the baddest man in the land. A wild haired, fur wearing, chain swinging madman by the name of Bruiser Brody. Brody had destroyed everyone that came in his path, absolutely destroying friend of Hulk Hogan, Tito Santana, on the March 1st 1986 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event. The main event that night was a tag team match pitting Andre the Giant & The Hulkster against Big John Studd & Don Muraco. During the match, Brody interfered, nailing Hogan with the huge logging chain in the ribs and costing him the match. Post match, Brody did a real number on Hogan's ribs, repeatedly whipping him with the massive logging chain. Doctors told Hogan that he'd never wrestle again, and should NOT seek revenge against the massive Brody. But the Hulkster was not one to stay down, and came back to Wrestlemania 2 with a vengeance, and broke ribs. Hulkster entered LA at Mania 2 for a steel cage showdown, a match designed to keep Brody's new running buddies in the Heenan family, Muraco, Bundy, and Heenan himself out of the cage, with broken ribs.
Brody went to work at the Hulkster's ribs, ribbing the tape off and absolutely demolishing him, but in the end, it was the Hulk who comes out on top, escaping over the top of the cage as Brody exits through the door.
Main Event of Chicago
Tag Team Grudge Match
Mr. Wonderful & Mr. T
versus
Roddy Piper & Bob Orton
It started a year earlier in a similar format, with T and partner Hulk Hogan doing battle with Orndorf and Piper at the first Wrestlemania. Unfortunately, Team Piper's second, Ace Bob Orton, nailed Orndorf with his famed cast and cost the team the match, splitting the trio up. The feud boiled for over a year between Piper and Orndorf, Mr. T getting back involved to back up his new found friend in Orndorf. After all, your enemies enemies are your friends. On the March 1st 1986 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, T stepped into the ring, not for a wrestling match, but a boxing match with Piper. The bout ended in disqualification when Piper ripped off his gloves and body slammed T, but it was the highest rated segment of the entire show. The showdown was set for Wrestlemania 2. Star of the A-Team Mr. T and his running buddy Mr. Wonderful versus Roddy Piper & his bodyguard, Ace Cowboy Bob Orton.
The match itself is a mirror almost of the Wrestlemania 1 Main Event, with Piper and Orton really working over Orndorf and trying to isolate him from Mr. T. But when T eventually gets tagged in, he goes on a rampage, scoring the pin over Bob Orton.
Main Event of New York
WWF Tag Team Titles Match
British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid)
versus
Dream Team (Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake)
The third main feud heading into WrestleMania was between Dream Team (Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake) and British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid) over the WWF Tag Team championship. On August 24, 1985, they won the tag titles from U.S. Express (Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda) Immediately after their title win, they were challenged by British Bulldogs for the titles. They retained their titles against Bulldogs at a house show on September 11 by getting disqualified. They defended the titles against Bulldogs again on the March 1, 1986 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, where they emerged victorious against Bulldogs. After Bulldogs failed in winning the titles twice, Dream Team agreed to defend their titles against Bulldogs for a final time with a title match set on WrestleMania.
