Many months ago I said I would write some amazing fantasy wwe; Raw, Smackdown, and Pay Per Views. But school demands and illness have prevented me from starting. So In Lieu of that, here are "my problems with the WWE fantasy booking."
This Writing will summarise the problems in my opinion of the WWE today, and will include some fantasy booking regarding what they could have done, and what they did wrong, and what should be done. Each problem will be listed under a number which can be referred to from the following table of contents"
1. Storyline and talent
2. Weekly shows
3. Pay Per Views
4. Missed opportunities
5. The lack of a long term plan
6. Repetitive storylines
7. Image and Demographic
8. The attitude era to the PG era
9. Championships
10. Miscellaneous
------------------------------Storylines and Talent---------------------------
A) The Raw Main event scene
There is no doubt that the Raw main event scene (If you can call it that) is extremely lacking at this point in time. We have 3 major superstars: Triple H, Randy Orton, and John Cena; All of which have feuded with each other in the past, and have competed in several matches against each other. In 2007 - 2008, John Cena vs Randy Orton was the main feud in the Raw Brand. They competed in matches at wrestlemania 24, Summerslam, Unforgiven, No way out. A decent feud, that got 4 pay per view main events (As much as Randy Orton vs Undertaker in 2005)
However, now in 2009, we are having Cena and Orton crammed down our throats again, with another 4 pay per view appearances. (Every Pay per view from Summerslam to Bragging Rights) We have now had a grand total of 8 Cena and Orton Pay Per View Appearances, which equals Shawn Michaels and Triple H (only if you include the elimination chamber)
Not to mention, The repetitiveness of the storyline. It seems every week, we have Cena coming out and once again informing us that he is going to take the title back, that he is sick of Orton (We've heard it all before, just another generic promo week after week)
I have nothing against generic promos, but occasionally you need something interesting to happen, like what happened at Summerslam 2009. (I am all for Orton Trying to get out of facing Cena by count out/disqualification, but if they want to do a run in, do it on RAW)
Thank God this storyline looks like it will end soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have a classic survivor series tag match.
The Same can be said for Triple H and Randy Orton (and to some extent legacy) The feud began way back in 2004, They have had the following matches on pay per views:
Unforgiven 2004, Survivor Series Classic match 2004 was based on the Orton vs HHH feud, Royal Rumble 2005, No mercy 2007, Wrestlemania 24, backlash 2008 fatal four way was more than half devoted to Orton Triple H, judgment day 2008, One night Stand 2008, Wrestlemania 25, backlash 2009, The Bash 2009, Night of Champions 2009 (Triple Threat with john Cena)
Thats 12 pay per views. Enough said about repetitiveness.
Another thing about storylines today is that they lack emotion. When I say the word "emotion" the first storyline that leaps to mind was the angle of the year in 2004: Chris Benoit vs Triple H vs Shawn Michaels.
Michaels and triple H wanted to Kill each other for the championship, and it was Benoit's dream to become champion one day. The storyline depicted Benoit having to fight and claw his way to the top: But he did it. Lines like " his 18 year odyssey has come true!" etc really contributed to the story. the emotion was there, and so was the hatred between Michaels and HHH.
The build up to Shawn Michaels and Triple H prior to Badd Blood 2004 is another great example. It started off generic ( Each guy screwed the other out of a title shot) but climaxed when Michaels, bloody, destroyed all members of evolution in the ring, before climbing his way through the crowd, all the way up to the sky box, just to fight triple H. They then had a REAL HELL IN A CELL MATCH at badd blood, that featured blood, and settled the rivalry once and for all.
I can understand the Triple H Orton feud prior to Wrestlemania and Backlash. It was emotional and it looked like Triple H wanted to Kill Orton. But it dragged through the year. It should've ended at Backlash, not carried over past one night stand, when no one cared anymore. (If Triple H is going to take a sabbatical, you cant just resume the storyline when he gets back. Injury angles usually last 1 month maximum, but he was absent from pay per view for double that time.
If I missed anything tell me, part 2 will HOPEFULLY be posted in the near future.
