Live thoughts as I read the show in full.
-Tremendous video package summarizing recent events in the two red-hot feuds atop the federation right now. Nobody does a recap like this like the Den. I will not debate this.
-Annoying Editor Alert: it's right out of the "chute", not shoot. Triple demerits, young man!
-The image of Jeff Hardy "playfully gyrating" to music is... kinda... how can I put this... less than hetero?
-Liking the Angle vs. Matt match. Angle basically giving Hardy the business in the early technical exchange, as it should be given Kurt's amateur background. Your matches might not be puro-tastic OMG WORKRATE (and they don't have to be in the hobby), but they're very true to the character of the guys involved.
-Loved the running neckbreaker off the ropes. I woulda at least casually mentioned Kurt's previously broken neck, but tough to do in your format.
-All in all a fine opening match. Angle makes Matt look like a million bucks in the losing effort. Am I the only one who could see a Angle-Jeff Hardy feud for the IC belt going forward??
-My oh my that Vince promo was one long block o' text. A well executed block, yes, but definitely not easy on the eyes.
-REGAL IN THE DENWF! Consider my week MADE. I can't remember if this was teased in Venom or not, but it's a pleasant surprise right now and can't wait to see how he's used going forward.
-Seems like just a matter of time before Regal earns a position of authoritah on Raw through Vince. That said, Val Venis as the immediate foil of Regal equals Instant Win.
-AND HE SAYS SUNSHINE! This is officially the greatest DenWWF segment of all time.
-Den's the only guy around here who incorporates the little things to make it seem like a real episode of Raw. The Castrol "Drive Hard" plug, for example.
-Were daps in style in 2000? I'm so white...
-Seems like your matches, as a whole, have more actual wrestling and less complete reliance on "sports entertainment" style wrestling. This is a good thing. Current WWE could take note of this.
-Ugh. "touch a superstar"... I miss when wrestlers were called wrestlers. I'm so old...
-Not sure why, as it was a more even match and more high impact, but that was a tough loss for Christian. Threw everything in the kitchen sink at Eddie, who took some huge bumps, but still kicked out of everything and won. Not complaining about Eddie advancing, and it sets up Christian nicely for good things in the future, but I guess the mark in me thought Christian would've benefited more from the W.
-Both these quarterfinals are a template as to how to get young talent over.
Aaaaaand, we're back.
-Nice quick rundown of the 8 KOTR qualifiers after the match. Shame that WWE doesn't even do something this simple nowadays.
-Oh, and my pick to win the whole shebang is Angle.
-Are we teasing a brotherly Hardys feud? I smell smoke but I doubt it leads to actual flames.
-Wasn't loving the DX segment. It accomplished its goal, but the delivery didn't work for me. The dialogue itself was fine, but it didn't "sound" right, particularly from Triple H and Shane. Just my opinion.
-Battle royal to determine tag contenders. I like it. Been done before (including by me) and can lead to some fun combinations.
-Everything that felt forced and ungenuine about the HHH-Shane seg is obliterated by the goodness in this in-ring segment with Shane, Jericho, Mankind. Really captures the characters of Y2J and Mick.
-Rock's just now getting to the building? What an unprofessional example for a champion to set.
-Foley/Austin No DQ with Foley's career at stake is a HUGE match. I'd be legitimately sad if Foley lost. Only because, in DenWF, I don't see him coming out of retirement 17 times.
-OUTSTANDING brawl between your four main players. Damn... just tremendous. Production-wise, though, a split screen would've been CRAZY for this.
-Edge as the mystery opponent is a good choice. Plus we get Kane-HHH at the PPV. KOTR card coming together nicely, and quickly.
-By the way I think the correct term is "forearm shiver", not forearm shimmer.
-Crucifix pin reversal to the Pedigree setup. Trying to picture that in my head... and I like it. That's a unique one.
-I enjoy the mind games in the Kane-HHH feud. It's not just a big mute monster laying waste. It's that... and more. Edge getting the win worked well, and it continues to be the night of reasonable pushes of New Talent.
-Vince confirms some of the matches made earlier. Three authority figures can be a little confusing at times.
-HOLY CRAP. Foley and Austin's WWF careers on the line. I would think that means an obvious win for Austin but that almost seems TOO obvious. Color me intrigued.
-I'm predicting Benoit and Taz wins the battle royal. Let's see if I'm right.
-Half right. Most interesting thing to happen in the actual match was Sid decimating Big Show after being eliminated. Benoit and Show is a cool choice to go against the APA. I could see a title switch.
-Triple demerits for the champion making her entrance first in the women's title match. HATE when the champion comes in first. Match was OK. I thought Steph as a non-wrestler almost got in a little too much offense, especially as the cowardly heel. The Sid-Show stuff made sense, and continued their simmering feud. Got a lot going on on this show, but not so much it overwhelms the palate.
-Regal's match was perfect. Absolutely perfect. Just a showcase squash of poor Val, and immediately establishes Regal as someone not to be trifled with on Raw.
-The ending... I didn't love it. The Bruce Smith fits in the vein of the Raw Guest Host thing going on nowadays, but unless I was actually in Buffalo... not sure I'd care. I don't know, it just seemed to fall a little flat. I would have to say the Shane-Vince feud is my least favorite of all the current storylines, as I thought the Shane vs Stooges stuff from the prior show was the weak link there.
OVERALL...
Another fine effort from the Den. Cohesive storylines, tight matches and the ability to make younger and new talent look credible without forcing them down the reader's throats.
