Welcome, what is up thank you for tuning into my increasingly popular reviews. Next up on the list is an oldie but a goodie. Tenn’s Mayhem. You might be able to say Stenn does Tenn....not like that you sick bastards. I mean I do a REVIEW for him. Are we all children here? Can I continue now? Thank you....sheesh some people.
That being said I did the pay per view and loved it. I still remember the big swerve. Crazy but now the “holy shit” moment has worn off and its time to show me it was a master plan and now Tenn Russo : )
Nice graphic of the arena I kinda dig little things like this. We get right to it with Taz vs. Regal. First thing I liked is Steve Regal. I’ve talked about this before. EVERY character needs to be written differently. Catchphrases, description, dialogue the whole shebang. I dug “Street Urchin”. The match was good and all but if I may air a complaint. I’m not sure I enjoy Taz coming in here and stomping Regal. Regal’s been a big time player in the company and I get WHY you did it or its revealed later on. However I think Taz could have destroyed someone more “expendiable” here and it would have given the same affect. Good match but I just didn’t like Regal getting beat by Taz after Regal just went over RVD. I get the whole Taz is a bad ass thing I just think maybe someone else could have been served up cold to TAz in this situation. Again I don’t comment on others stories but dammit Tenn I know whats going on in your stories and I reserve the right to comment : )
The promo that followed was BAD ass. From the word caboose, to the word chronic, to the Japanese jitterish I dug this promo. It was a great example of weaving storylines in and out of each other. I guess a brawl was the only way to get this thing over with but I really thought Taz would turn on RVD in the end. Its not bad that he didn’t I’m just saying its what I thought.
Non Roster Match
Do you not have enough job I mean uh wrestlers laying around Tennster? Very good mach I got the feel these guys were going all out to impress the boss. Then the big, nasty, fire breathing, seven foot tall Big Show DESTROYED them. I like that. Road Dogg was down pat and then Gunn promptly ate a chair that makes me happy. Anyway it served its purpose. I have yet to really get into the DX vs. Big Show feud but hey one of these days….
SNME
I like the fact that late night wrestling is returning but a few things in there. I’d like more “originality” in the names for the CWF. Its is its own company but so many things make it feel like an alternate reality WWF more than an entirely new promotion forging its own legacy with its own names. Wrestlemania I get that one. However I think you could have came up with a new name for SNME that would have been more your “own” and not falling back on the WWF names to go along with a lot of the WWF stables still intact. Minor but hey like I preach it’s the minor stuff that can take ya out of the zone.
Vince earlier today
I didn’t get the detest, the disgust, the utter contempt that Vince normally is over flowing with from that promo. I thought he’d be SICK, DISGUSTED, ready to vomit with his rant about having his empire taken away and being reduced to a lowly manager. Instead I never picked up that pissed off Vince vibe. When you said Vince was fuming I never got that in his dialogue I read the same Vince all the way through.
Credible vs. Calo
I like the rebel cruiserweight champion gimmick. The match was short and I like me some calo with his break dancing and aluminum foil mask but I’m glad this was a short match.
X Pac promo
Short, harmless, it made sense and then you move on. I dig it ooooh yeah.
Lucha Promo
I really dug Eddie’s promo a lot actually. It puts my Eddie to shame and dammit that makes me angry. I liked the promo but I don’t care who is writing D LO and Mark I’m just not into that tag team. However that being said lets check out the match.
Rey/Eddie vs. D LO/Mark
Pretty good match really. Its not the matches since its fun to write people bumping for good ole Mark its just that aside from that I haven’t seen much done with the guy. He’s mean and nasty now he’s loveable and fun. However that has nothing to do with this that’s just a general anaylisis on the character in general that’s written by everyone I’ve ever seen write him. I pretty much figured this would end in DQ. I’m gonna take it on faith that Eddie and Rey are boys, that being said NEVER trust Eddie, Rey.
Credible/Chavo
I was going to comment having another Credible segment after he already had a match and X Pac already got his match set up with him. That being said I liked the interaction between the two. Although I have to say Chavo as the boss is such a huge disappointment with all these huge names you got running around this place. I just can’t get behind Eddie’s little nephew being the man in charge. On one hand I hope it doesn’t last on the other I used to hate when SD would change GM’s every week. It makes the brand look unstable and weak. That being said I’m digging the cruiserweight storyline.
Angles promo
I gotta say as great as Angle is maybe that would have been a better backstage segment. Maybe Angle running into Chavo backstage after he was done with Credible or maybe Team Angle is walking past while Chavo is just finishing and so Angle stops to rant to the camera. Just wasn’t much promo to come all the way out to the ring for just a few short words. Its not like he said much that couldn’t have just been “announced” either by JR and Heyman or just over the course of the week. Plenty of ways to do it that does’t involved parading them all the way out to the ring for a few short words.
Shamrock vs. Hernandez
Was this guy going back then? I would have figured he would have just been starting out. Are the rosters that thin or is this just a filler, feed ‘em to Shamrock type match. We’ll see. Damn yeah I was dead on with the filler comment. Wow not even that.
The Corporation
I liked the idea behind the promo. But neither Vince nor Ken really felt unique or different. Vince has felt bland this whole show, Ken of course is Ken. Vince started to get there a little bit with the “dammit” but that was as close as I came to feeling Mr. MAC MAN. That being said I forgot that Ken wasn’t actually part of Vince’s crew. I do recall it now its just he’s been hanging with them so much that I completely forgot it wasn’t official. I smell face turn for Ken here soon. Also Vince’s group seemed a lot more impressive when Sabu was champion.
Hostile Takeover/Benoit vs. Malenko/Testkushi
The Main event was OKish. It had its moments I loved the Malenko/Benoit exchanges however that being said this is the FIRST Mayhem ever. I felt like it deserved a bigger main event. The show in general felt like business as usual and not the FIRST show of Mayhem. That being said the match itself was just fine with Malenko getting a win on a McMahon boy that’s good stuff.
Overall
Overall its was a good show. Did it top the pay per view? Most certainly not but you already knew that. I felt like the start of the show was so hot and nothing else really captured that intensity, that unpredictable feeling you started the show out with. Coming hot off of a crazy pay per view like that I was ready for some crazy CWF action. This being your first show ever for Mayhem I thought maybe there would be all sorts of things going on.
It seemed like this show lacked star power. I’ve looked for just a “roster” for the two brands but I can’t find one. I looked on the draft page and it just sent me to the draft show. So I admit to being a bit unsure of who ya got on your roster and who ya don’t. That being said Mayhem started out with star power with Angle and RVD and such. Although admitingly those guys are upper mid carders to my knowledge those guys haven’t been “made” into main eventers. So I’m looking at RVD, Angle, Taz and who else to carry this show? Its not that the show is bad I was just looking for more overspill from Redemption. All that drama all that crazyness and most of it felt confined to Redemption with very little over spill. I’m not saying you needed to have the same feuds just the VIBE. You know that feeling when your watching/reading a special show. This wasn’t there. It started out with that great promo and then honestly it all felt downhill from there.
Again not a BAD show it just felt “flat” in a lot of areas especially with that crazy pay per view. Again I’m not looking for you to live up to the pay per view but I felt like a lot of energy from that pay per view wasn’t there and starting a new show and kicking off the brand split that’s HUGE and it just in my mind seemed like a bigger deal more HYPE at the very least. I hardly remember the announcers even hyping up “the first ever edition” “the first ever this” “what a night on CWF’s first ever Mayhem” “Never in the history of as port has a company split itself in two like this”. I got like zero hype Tennster.
Anyway I’m gonna stop rambling. The dialogue was spot on, the stories and matches were solid it just felt vibeless, hypeless. Normally I’d be ok with it if it was just a throw away show. However this was the first show after a pay per view, your first ever Mayhem period. I was looking for something bigger, maybe even a HUGE main event and instead got a six man tag between with the exception of Benoit maybe midcarders. Looking forward to the other brand and see who they got on their roster and see how that show will be different writing and presentation wise if at all from this one. Take care Tenn.
One last thing Tenn before I let ya outta here. When we were on BOOK there was a lot of us that bitched and moaned about updated pictures, and MORE pictures and what not. I don’t remember if you were on board with it or not. That being said we have limitless display of pictures at our hands. We can literally use any picture, of anyone from any time period in wrestling. I’m not sure what your free time is like but even if you just found a picture here and a picture there and uploaded them to a photobucket account it would be a long way to making the show more cosmetically pleasing. That being said atleast you were able to break up your text with titles and using a different format than others have used. Just something to think about. You had that nice graphic of the arena and then no more pictures the entire night I found it strange. Anyway I’m done for now I promise.
