I had a chance to sit down with Chuck Taylor of CHIKARA, IWA Mid South, and even in our own booking realm, WCWA fame to discuss the upcoming CHIKARA King of Trios tournament. The tournament will take place March 27th, 28th, and 29th at the famed ECW Arena (New Alhambra Arena/The Arena) in South Phillidelphia at the corner of Swanson & Ritner. For more information, please visit the official CHIKARA website at www.chikarapro.com
It’s March once again. Around these parts, that means March Madness, but in CHIKARA, it means the annual King of Trios tournament, where teams of three assemble for the prestigious King of Trios cup. Today, King of Trios participant and one third of the combination F.I.S.T., Chuck Taylor, joins us for his thoughts and views on the annual tournament, this year taking place at the famed ECW Arena March 27th, 28th, and 29th. Chuck Taylor, welcome.
A) Oh yeah baby! Interview time.
Q) Chuck Taylor, this year’s King of Trios assembled unlike any other, with many teams actually having to qualify for the field of sixteen. Your team of F.I.S.T. was one of these that had to qualify. Do you think this puts you at an advantage or a disadvantage?
A) It really had no bearing on us as a team.. Because, undoubtedly we were going to qualify. However, the death of Worker Ant and the winning the match gives us unparalleled momentum coming in.
Q) As a veteran trio of CHIKARA, do you feel like F.I.S.T. has an advantage walking into the 2009 King of Trios, especially with such untested teams as The Future is Now, The Cold Front, and Team EPIC WAR?
A) Of course, we are the only team that has competed, unchanged, in all 3 King of Trios Tournaments. We know each other forwards and backwards.
Q) CHIKARA features a roster consisting mostly of masked superstars. Even the select few unmasked wrestlers, such as F.I.S.T. stable mates Icarus & Gran Akuma were formerly masked, losing their masks (and in Icarus’ case, hair) in feud ending battles. Why do you choose to not done the facial veil?
A) I am entirely to attractive to wear a goofy mask. Why hide something this pretty? Plus those masks are hot and cumbersome.
Q) If you personally could choose one first round team to face, who would you choose?
A) I would love to face the Colony again, just to kill another one of them. But, they're not in the tournament.. So, I really don't care who we face.
Q) And what is the one team you’re hoping to avoid in the tournament?
A) Team CZW. Those guys are weird.
Q) If you weren’t teaming with Icarus & Gran Akuma, what other two wrestlers would you choose to team with to attempt to concur the King of Trios?
A) Orange Cassidy and The Human Weightlifting Machine Shaun Roberts. For sure.. But, I don't think that is going to happen. FIST is awesome.
Q) As a “rudo” by classification, do you feel that the referees, specifically CHIKARA Senior Official Bryce Remsburg, unjustly harass you and search you for international objects, more than he would a “technico” such as Helios or Fire Ant?
A) First of all, Helios is Ricochet. He just cheated to get back in the company after I beat him. Fire Ant is a loser, and will soon die. As for the question, yes, I do feel as though Remsburg and his constantly revolving cast of misfit referees do pick on us too much. I am a good Christian boy. I don't cheat.
Q) As a former winner of the Rey De Voladores and Young Lions Cup, with your team mates both being very long running Campeonatos de Parejas in CHIKARA, as well as former individual winners of the Torneo Cibernetico, do you feel like you have an advantage going into the King of Trios tournament that other teams do not have?
A) We were the golden trio before it was cool to be the golden trio. We've won everything there is to win, and now the inevitable is approaching, where we take home the King of Trios.
Q) Is there a particular reason you have chosen for small children to be the target of your anger?
A) Kids are stupid, and they get whatever they want. Some one needs to put them in their place.
Q) Just recently for IWA Deep South in Alabama, you and your supposed illegitimate father Tracy Smothers were involved in a riot. Do you feel like this sort of pandemonium and unruliness sets a bad example for CHIKARA performers as a whole, as well as possibly setting a bad reputation for CHIKARA as a company?
A) Smothers in Chikara = money. I'll start a riot in Chikara, because I don't care what the company looks like. This company has done everything in it's power to keep me from growing and yet I still have. So, I'm going to start the biggest riot in South Philly history.
Q) In 2007, your team of F.I.S.T.. fell victim to Team Japan, when you yourself fell victim to Yoshiaki Yago. Do you have some sort of preparation ahead of time to avoid a repeat fate to Team DDT, despite the difference in members? Are you looking forward to a chance of redemption against KUDO?
A) KUDO will die if we get our hands on him. So will Ibushi (who already ducked myself and Icarus in Germany by feigning an injury) and so will Michael Nakazawa.. I'm not afraid of Japs.
Q) Do you have any closing thoughts, statements, or other comments to the CHIKARA universe or to the wrestling world in general?
A) Buy my T-shirts. Cheer for me because I'm awesome. Give me money. Watch us win King of Trios March 26, 27, and 28 in Philly at the Arena.
