**A Review of J Hobo’s HURT**
To say this show wasn’t a classic, you would be a liar. I’ve read a lot of cards and read from a lot of bookers over the past few years and this is one of the best I’ve ever read. I started with the pre-show (as I am not too familiar with your series or storylines) and pretty much learned right away that J Hobo is from the Chicago area. I am as well so a lot of the independent wrestlers on the show, I know all too well. The main event was the hook for me as Chris Hero, Eddie Kingston, and The Messiah in the same ring guarantees something special.
The pre-show was a nice build to the show. I like the video montages done to Johnny Cash’s hurt. Joel Gertner as a backstage interview is always a plus as you know you are going to have comedy throughout the entire card. Already liking the Joey Eastman Worldwide (JEW) stable. Maybe they’ll have an 8 fingers salute instead of a 4 Horsemen hand sign. Hopefully you get that.
Necro Butcher dominates his competition and then brawls with Brain Damage. This has potential to be an uncontainable brawl. Even Kris Kloss gets nailed in the melee. I didn’t know where the Shane Douglas spitting on him came from. It seemed a bit out of left field.
I’m not a fan of the Beef Wellington/Marty Jannetty angle already. When all the fans and colleagues call you the piss break match, it’s pretty much giving these two men suck heat. That can be damaging to both men if you ever decide to do a good push. Stuff like this for some reason, always gets remembered.
Last match on the pre-show had the Japanese Oil Man (never seen him before) and Sexxxy Eddy (have seen him before). Now this is how I know you are a talented writer. I never heard of Nakazawa but enjoy Sexxxy Eddy. Through your writing, you made Eddy/Oil Man into a great tag team that played off each other quite well. I was entertained by this and it would not of been possible without great writing.
And boo AT&T! Verizon Wireless, home of the Blackberry Storm! Biiiatches! Yeah, I work for Verizon.
Pay-Per-View opens with a decent opener with Roc, Dustin Lee and Darin Corbin. Knowing only Roc and Corbin going into this match, I was a bit disappointed with Lee taking the win. I honestly think Billy Roc has loads of potential and this would be a great way to elevate him.
Appearances by The Iron Sheik trying to score weed. To quote Carlito, now that’s cool!
As apprehensive as I am about women’s wrestling, your match with Mickey Knuckles and LuFisto is probably one of the best women’s matches I’ve read. Very good job capturing the violence and the stiffness of the action. Women in wrestling usually doesn’t strike the Frogg’s fancy but I would of watched this match on Smart Mark Video.
Now following the women’s match is the tag team ladder match between the Backseats and the Blk-out. Wow. This match was also extremely good. Some of the ways you go in depth with the matches such as explaining Sabian’s powerbomb from the ladder and how he didn’t do the sitdown so he would have great position to climb the ladder. It’s little things like that description that add more life to the matches instead of just writing the moves. This is a perfect example of why you are a good booker. You explain the strategy as well as the emotion in the match, as well as listing the moves. Fine job and nice ending sequence to this match.
So far, this has been a spectacular show. And it keeps getting better. I’m not truly on board with the Marty Jannetty hate and having him lose all the time. But it is proving to be a pretty decent angle. Now I’m glad I didn’t go for a piss break in this match because some of the moves were great. A diving Ass punch! Now because of the angle you laid out, I would’ve preferred for Jannetty to win without cheating. It would of made for more of a shocking moment and after the build-up, the finish was a bit of a let down for me. I would’ve liked Jannetty to get a flash finish and then perhaps attack Beef after the match with the belt, while flipping off the shocked crowd. But great body of the match and it was a good build to this match with Jannetty’s losing streak,
Another hard-hitting match as Joker faced Brain Damage. I am a fan of both of these guys so I expect hard-hitting walking in the cage door, so to speak. And I wasn’t disappointed. These two beat the hell out of each other. And Lance Storm joining JEW leads onto more possible angles.
I definitely enjoyed the Danny Havoc vignette. Great job with that.
AT&T --- boooo!
Three way match between Jack Evans, Ricochet, and Hardcore Ninja #2. Never heard of Ninja #2 but have actually heard of Pac, who Ninja turned out to be. Even though I’ve never seen Pac in action, the way you described the audience’s reaction, made it feel like a big deal. And thank you for not choosing an easy road of having Ninja unmask right before the finish and win the title. Pac became the surprise of the match and didn’t win. That is unusual and great booking because of that. This was a fun match and I love how you got the double moonsault over. I’ve seen it but reading it described almost got me excited like the first time I saw it.
Tyler Black is coming. Now that is cool. Some great upcoming matches for Mr. Black.
The death match follows. Not a big fan of death matches so a lot of this didn’t pertain to my interest. I did read the match and you did another good job describing the mayhem. I did not like the finish at all. Not one bit. This is a death match, which should signify time limit draws. I like a good old-fashioned time limit draw match but save those for the TV Title defenses. And the title becoming vacant now because of draw. Sorry Hobo, just didn’t buy into this.
So Chuck Taylor versus Delirious is next. I like Taylor’s line to the ref to make Delirious stop being weird. I will kill somebody the next time they say, when in Rome. Also to be honest, I wasn’t too into this match as well. Nothing really stood out as an important spot or stand-out spot except for the classic grenade sequence. I enjoy both wrestlers but for a title change, this just felt blah. It wasn’t terrible by any means but does not follow some of the earlier matches very well.
Now at the main event. The hype has been there from the pre-show and all the way through the show. It’s got me excited and not sure who to root for. The Messiah, whom I have always enjoyed, got eliminated first. Got me kinda sad but then I remembered, holy shit. It’s now Hero and Kingston. This is gonna be good and you know what. It did not disappoint. I thought for sure Kingston would get the duke and yet another surprise to me, Chris Hero wins the belt. Amazing main event!
So in conclusion, Hurt lived up to the hype. This was just a spectacular card. Sure there were matches that I didn’t get into (the deathmatch, Taylor/Delirious) but that has been more than made for in matches like the main event, the ladder match, and the cage match. And I cannot forget the women’s match as well. You’re a great writer and booker Hobo and I do look forward to reading more of your cards. Keep up the good work.
Next on the review list, Scorpion Den’s Raw 5/29! To anyone else who would like to have their name added to Frogg’s Review List, I do have a Royal Rumble 1988 hanging out in the shows section whom from what I’ve heard, still lays lonely and review-less. But that’s alright because it’s not too late. Go check out the card if you haven’t already.
Ribbit.
