It's a slow night at work so I'm doing some reviews.
As always, I tend to go stream of consciousness on these, and rarely pull punches.
So, here we go.
-First off, Homicide is the "Notorious 187", not 167. Sadly there is no 167 police scanner code. I'm going to make one up and say it's the "we're low on crullers" code. MAN LAW!
-How come the Lightweight champion isn't listed on the list o champs?
-Interesting promo by Shane. Started as the face, then at the end revealed he was back to get revenge for his exiled father. In short, he's kinda like Scott in Goldmember. Except no hair loss... YET.
-Defending a TV title against a random opponent on a weekly basis. Hmmm, where've I seen that before? I can't remember, but I'm sure whoever did it was a godsend to this little hobby. Probably well-hung, too.
-"Cage breaks up the exchange by slyly eye raking Helms in between the eyes!" I woulda gone for the eye rake to the nostril myself.
-Hell of an opening match. Lots of big moves and back and forth wrestling. Any sort of RVD/Christian feud gets no argument from me, but it seems Christian would be the one making the first move in the rivalry since he just came off the injured list at Van Dam's expense. Why should RVD give a crap about someone he put on the shelf two months ago?
-I enjoyed the twist with Shane receiving a pass from the owners of the venue.
-The Sabu-RVD hardcore match just seemed a little paint by numbers given who was involved.
-Does Joey have a stroke every time someone wins the match?
-Didn't think much of the "all the competitors in the four way tag match got attacked so we're not having it" plot device. Would've at least meant something if we knew who was competing in the match in the first place.
-Angle vs. random opponents every week could make for some reliably entertaining segments.
-Like the TV title rules, except that #6 makes no sense if the champ can lose the belt on a DQ or via interference. If that's true then a win doesn't just have to come by pinfall or submission. Just sayin.
-Perhaps I'm nitpicking, but for a guy like Burchill to pull off a standing SSP, I'd make that a finisher rather than just a middle of the match move.
-So much for drawing out the random challenger bit. Definitely makes Burchill look awesome in his debut, but if that was the goal, why not wait a few shows and have Angle polish off a few challengers. Then that'd make it a bigger deal for Burchill to win it. Also I would've described what the C4 is since Burchill is new to the show and hardly a "house hold name." Rock Bottom we know. C4, not so much.
-Al Snow + Head = quality comic relief. I don't think this can be argued.
-Daniels referencing the demons from hell? Ugh.
-The Punk/Dinsmore match is a nice change of pace after all the high-flying, crazy spots and head-droppin that occurred on the show to this point.
-I understand where you're going with the Punk-Angle feud, but three run-ins in four matches is a bit much for me.
-I think the handicap match was better than I expected given the limitations of the stipulation. Good solid action, and Daniels as the first man in the Corporation is a nice choice. However, ANOTHER run-in? That's four in five matches.
OK, some general thoughts.
In short: I like the general direction you're going, I just don't love some of the steps you are taking to get there.
I thought you really had something with the weekly random defenses by Angle, and was disappointed to see you basically scrap that storyline right at the start. Likewise, I like the idea of a newcomer like Burchill beating Angle, but I would've waited a while to make that happen.
The Punk and Angle run-ins made sense, but with that in mind I think I would've gone with a different finish for the Christian-Helms opener. Also, there were just way too many run-ins. RVD distracts Christian, Punk interferes on Angle, Angle then screws Punk, Shane screws Taz. It definitely got a little repetitive by the final match.
I think there's a lot of promise here, I'd just rather fine-tune execution, especially on the promos. The only guy whose voice really stood out as being unique, to me, was Taz. I recommending watching as many promos of the various guys online and what not to get their speech rhythms and phrases down.
It may seem like I didn't like the show. I did. I'm just trying to provide some constructive criticism.
