WCWA I remember things like Angle vs. Spanky with this series I do believe. Well hell who knows what I really remember. Anyway I know my review won’t be near as harsh as some of the other things that get said about your series so I’m not too worried about you crying. You’ve read my other reviews I’m just gonna give thoughts, advice, reactions and see where it gets us. On with the show.
I dig Shane Douglas as the color guy. Shane was made for this role in a promotion such as this. He couldn’t get away with any of the shit he says in the E or maybe even TNA but a place like WCWA fits him like a glove. The first match was filled with a lot of people I’m not too familier with. I the writing on it was awesome and it’s a battle royal so I don’t really expect too many introductions by commentary who everyone is. That said I did feel commentary got off track……..a lot. Anyway though it’s a battle royal and a guy won not much more to say about it.
BLK OUT Promo, this was nicely done. I loved the introductions even if its just what the character normally does it gave me a chance to figure out who was who and pretty much realize these guys are some bad mofos. I liked most of their promos even if it might have ran long for a backstage segment.
Brain Damage vs. Jimmy Jacobs
I’m starting to feel like this promotion has the same names as say IWA MS, not your using mainstream indy guys your using a step below them or sometimes two. I’m not sure too many people know who Brain Damage is. They’ve heard the name but I doubt they’ve seen his work. At any rate the match was very good at putting over how sick and twisted Brain Damage can be in the ring. Jimmy Jacobs seemed to sorta just be there.
Delrious vs. Nate Webb
I actually like Delerious a lot, Nate Webb again just another random hardcore wrestler to me. I like that Derious went over but I just had a real hard time getting into this match for some reason. It wasn’t bad it just didn’t draw me in like I was hoping it would.
Beef vs. Nakazawa
Now this is a match I’m looking forward to. You did a great job promoting this match at the start of the card. It has that whole established WCWA star taking on the very best Japan has to offer for the title feel and I dig that kinda stuff. I liked this match a lot in fact I think so far it’s the best match of the card, I wish it would have went on a little bit longer.
Acid vs. Chuck Taylor
I have no idea who Chuck Taylor is but last time I checked this wasn’t a frog card so Chuck won’t go over. Well ok I was wrong, I didn’t think you’d put him in the finals I knew Acid was already a tag champion but I didn’t think you wanted Taylor going over the guy involved in one appears to be your hottest feud. I really can’t agree with Acid being beat by Chuck Taylor. Even the announcers tell us he’s a nobody and for a nobody to beat one half the tag champions, even if it was with interference I just can’t get behind choices like that. I’m more of a protect the guys in the hot feuds and champions and don’t have them lose to almost jobbers. Good match, almost too good for who was involved. I knew when Acid didn’t just squash this guy I was in trouble.
Beef Promo
I loved this promo. I screamed fun loving babyface just out ot have a good time. More Beef please.
Eddie Kingston vs. Sabu
GREAT match, the right guy went over, the match was very good and you really put over just how tough Sabu is with the ending. Everything about this match is what a title tournament should be about. Best match of the night BY FAR.
Overall
Ok so now comes the time when I get to tell you what I liked and what I really didn’t like. As always I’ll start with what I didn’t like that way we end on a positive note. Again the first thing that comes to mind is no graphics, no pics, not even a text color change. Like the last show of Tony’s I reviewed its so hard to read this type of show you always are going back and reading something you missed. I don’t know how easy it is to do pics on this freeweb stuff but some graphics, pics, different color text anything to let me know whats going on. Heck even a Wrestling A vs. Wrestler B to let me know where the match starts would be nice. Aside from better presentation there were other things too. I think the lack of promos again, no promos, no real idea who some of these guys are being a lot of these guys are CZW and IWA MS guys. I watch some IWA MS but mainly for the likes of Necro, Low Ki, Hero etc. It would have been nice to have the commentators making less sex jokes and bringing us up to speed on the characters. I see that as a problem all across the board the commentary sometimes has NOTHING to do with character development, story advancement or even putting the match over. A lot of it is just joking banter back and forth. I’m not just talking you I’m talking across the board. Commentary in wrestling is the biggest tool we have. It’s a way for us to flat out tell the audience what it is going on, who to cheer, who to boo, what to expect and they don’t even know we’re doing it. I was upset with the lack of promos and the general feel of “who the fuck are these guys”. Between the commentary giving me no clues as to who these guys are or even what level their on in the WCWA there were no promos from these guys or their opponents putting them over. I’ve said it a lot I can’t get into a match really drawn into a match without knowing atleast SOMETHING about the characters going at it. So summing up the not likes we got some presentation lacking, we got nobody in the show really clueing us in on who these uknown guys were and the commentary was too many jokes and not enough of putting characters, matches and stories over.
Lets move onto the good. The good is that I have a clear idea of what your main event storyline is, I know that BLK Out Run this shit and I like knowing that. I also like the job you did promoting the Beef match from the start of the show. As I said before I love Douglas on commentary and I even like the grunged out underground feel. I even like the fact that your using guys in this promotion that nobody would think to use. Its not that I don’t like the guys its just you haven’t really shown me who they are yet. I know sometimes J you get into this whole “me vs. the world” type attitude when you write your shows. Mainly you catch a lot of flak for your in your face hardcore style. Instead of discouraging you I think at times it makes you want to be MORE in your face. Also with comments like “I write for me and nobody else”. Well that’s fine to a degree but if you were booking a promotion that attitude would get you about one show in. You have to take into account what other people are seeing as they read this. You might know who all these guys are and other indy marks might know who these guys are. But I consider myself pretty up to date with ROH, PWG and a lot of the NWA and again I was lost with some of these guys. I know the promotion is young and is just finding its feet so to speak with the title tournaments and such. I just want you to realize that we don’t’ all know who Brain Damage and some of the others are. Some character development even if its from the commentators talking about Brain Damage and his accomplishments in the past and his hardcore attitude would be better than nothing.
Overall I would suggest this show but if you don’t know who Brain Damage, or Chuck Taylor, or Team BLK OUT, or a lot of the guys in this battle royal are your going to be lost. I’d suggest if you don’t know who these guys are to wait a few weeks for J to find his footing and get this show’s champions and stories all sorted out. I see the direction your headed I’m just waiting on you to get there J. Again not a bad show, just felt really chaotic.
P.S Next show to be reviewed is Zombies HWA 16 and then Tenn's REDEPTION you don't wanna miss those. Both should be up before the end of the ngiht.
