So I see Frogg hasn't been around since May but I'm just going from the bottom of the page to the top and reading the shows. If a show catches me good or bad I'll review it. After that I'll get into some Den, Tenn and whoever else isn't on the first page that I know their work. On with the review
Let me say that when it comes to creative promotions, creative rosters and creative, original back stories NOBODY touches Frogg. This man invented the word original at BOOK. Its very possible Frogg is close to predated the much talked about Tommy as far as BOOK time goes. Now that I’m done hyping up somebody that truly needs none lets get started on the show.
Again you don’t disappoint with the premise, you’ve really created an entire “world” here with smaller feeder leagues and your own take on the mecca WWE. Very nicely done a ton of effort and it looks like this is one and done for you which is a shame. If you scaled the detail and work to half of what you put into these shows and put out more than a show a year I have a feeling any discussion of “the best” would have you at the top of the list my friend. This just seemed like a great idea but more so for a “group” of guys rather than just one guy who struggles the way it is to get shows done
Ok one with the show. So Michael Cole and JR, Todd Grisham as the backstage interviewer? Very poor choice for a commentary crew but hey, JR’s good but Cole on color and Grisham in the back? I’d rather see one of the many nameless Diva’s in the back and possibly Tazz or Josh Matthews on color just to add something to it. But hey its your series and you can write Cole however you want although I bet even with YOU writing for Cole he’s still going to be dull and boring, its impossible to make this blackhole of charisma entertaining. Lets continue before Cole sends me a cease and desist order.
Dudleyz vs. The New Assasins I don’t have as much time for the indy’s as I used to but I still know a TON of guys damn near the entire ROH, PWG and some of the smaller promotions, I’ve never heard of these guys. The match was ok but I really disagree with the Dudleyz losing to guys I’ve never heard of,, if you want to put them over that’s fine but to go over the Dudleyz in the first match of the new WWE I just can’t get behind that one sir.
Batista promo was a bit too serious and bland. Batista works best as a sarcastic, laid back kinda guy. I know the WWE tries to book him as this big promo guy but he’s best suited for small backstage skits where he can be funny and sarcastic, or run in attacks where he can just destroy someone. Not bad but just kinda boring…
The Iron Saints vs. The Highlanders
WHAT A MATCH! Man I again don’t know who the Iron Saints are but I know who the Highlanders are and I’m huge marks for the, I figured it was the perfect way to get Piper back on t.v in a reoccurring role. You nailed the match and the ending was good to set something up in the future or maybe just play on the fact that he got racked with a steel chair and still has to wrestle again. Either way much improved.
Joe promo, see now THIS was a Joe promo, he was very confident and he went into very good detail his thought pattern and just HOW Joe was gonna kill you. The show is picking up steam now.
I loved how you built up the backstory behind John Cena’s big return and how you built this other guy up through clips too. Huge kudos to that. If you would have done that with the Saints and Assasins so I could have gotten a feel for them maybe I wouldn’t have been so disappointed over their matches.
Cena vs. James Keenan
Good match and good way to get Cena back into the thick of things even if its against a guy no one has heard of but hey that’s ok. Cena got the win, the other guy looked strong and that’s where it stays. Good match but so far nothing has topped the tag match.
Again good buildup here I would have loved to see Collyer go over I’m a huge mark for him. Anyhow still effective with the buildup and the clips but less so when I’ve heard of NO ONE in the match. No promo’s, no real let on to what their characters are like. Good match but with it being two guys I’ve never heard of I couldn’t get emotionally attached without atleast a backstory or a promo or something letting me know what these two nameless guys are about. I’ve noticed you got a lot of “no names” on the show my suggestion would be pairing them with mid carders, givng them promo time before the matches so we can get a feel for these guys before their doing battle with each other or the likes of John Cena.
Highlanders vs. New Assasins
I know I skipped a match but there isn’t any real way for me to review it without knowing anything about the characters or where they came from or anything it would just be words on a page so I’m continuing. This match again was very good, although again I don’t know the Saints or the Assasins it was a very good match and the “over” team won the titles and even had some mystery there at the end. Very well done still not as good as the first match IMO.
Dos Caras vs. John Cena
My friend I know you have a youth movement push the likes of which I’ve never seen before but Caras I guy I know nothing about beat the biggest star for the last four years in pro wrestling? I understand it’s a different world but in any world Cena is still Cena. Very disappointing my friend.
The Royal Rumble
Davidson, Johnny the Body, Cowboy Rock and Roll, Cloudy my friend WHO are these people. The Rumble was written great but again I just can’t agree with you putting the title on a guy I’ve never heard of before.
At the end of the day I have to say I’m disappointed. Not in the writing, or in the quality of the writing but in the lack of story. There just seemed to be all this confusion around what was going on. The show had good moments but for the most part this show was filled with guys that I’m assuming work on some local indy show or something since I’ve never heard of them. I just can’t get behind guys like Caras and Body being champions in this world without knowing ANYTHING about them. No promos, no build up and yet here they stand beating the likes of John Cena for titles. Again the writing was fantastic, the quality was on a level not seen in a while from me. I just couldn’t get emotionally attached and at the end of the day isn’t that what wrestling is all about? I think this is completely different than your “legends” feds such as you know Money Inc with JBL and The Million Dollar Man vs. The Funks or something like that. This is so far from what your used to writing that I think you forgot that none of us have a clue who these guys are. Maybe if you would have done some promo work leading up to this show or during this show to give us a clue who these guys beating the likes of Cena and the Dudleyz were then I wouldn’t be so opposed to it. It looks like this was one and done. There was potential it just needed some stories interjected into it instead of all this running around by guys I’ve never heard of. Solid first effort but again without characters and stories I can’t get emotionally attached and if we don’t get emotionally attached then there is no point. I hope my first review in a long time wasn’t too harsh if you even read this anytime soon.
