[Thunder doesn’t open with a tantalizing limo arrival, or a shocking announcement from Eric Bischoff, but with a static shot of a studio set. Mike Tenay and Scott Hudson stand in front of two flat-screen televisions bearing the Thunder logo.]
Tenay: Welcome fans to this special edition of WCW Thunder. With just over three days until WCW Starrcade this Sunday, we thought we’d take this opportunity to take a look back at the the feud between WCW and The Darkside, a feud that has very nearly torn this company apart.
Hudson: On September the 4th, 2000, WCW underwent a rebirth. Wrestlers were hired and fired, we got a new set, a new commissioner in the form of Arn Anderson and after a few months hiatus, WCW returned. However, the night of WCW’s rebirth, was also the debut of what may be the cause of WCW’s demise – The Darkside.
[Hall superplexes Goldberg, and just as the hit the canvas, the lights in the arena go off!!]
Hudson: What is it NOW?!
[The arena is lit up not by the normal lights, but by a huge explosion, and the sight of the Nitro Set being set on fire! The newly installed Flair-Tron is burning to the ground, as is the WCW sign!!! ]
Dusty: What the HELL?!
Hudson: The WCW sign is.. it's on fire?!!!
[The fire burns a line down the middle of the entrance ramp, and starts heading towards the ring?! The ramp to the ring is now on fire, and the flames have now spread to the cage! The one side of the cage is on FIRE!!]
Hudson: Somebody get these people out of here! There are children in the front row!
[The flaming side of the cage snaps off the rest of the cage, and falls INSIDE THE RING, just after Hall and Goldberg make their escape! The ring, the cage, the entrance ramp, the stage, the WCW logo, the Flair Tron, all of them are on fire!!!]
Hudson: Dusty, we better get out of here...
Voice: WCW. Tonight you may have been 'Reborn', but I promise you, by next week, you will be destroyed once more... Because The Darkside has arrived in WCW... And there will be NO escaping it..
Tenay: A flaming ring may have been fitting symbolism for a promotion that had emerged from the ashes, but it had a much more ominous meaning. The Darkside had arrived in WCW, and the next week on Nitro, we learned who was behind it. It was the ultimate betrayal by WCW’s favourite son, and it shocked the wrestling world.
[Sting and Booker grab chairs from ringside, and take them up to the entrance ramp, where all the combatents in the match have descended upon. Sting takes out Hall with a chair, while Booker cracks one over Nash's back. With all members of the nWo out cold, it only leaves the Darkside vs The Horsemen. Booker, Buff and Jarrett break off and fight the Road Warriors and Vampiro, and their brawl ends up backstage, leaving Flair, Anderson and Sting alone with 7Ven!! The WCW patriots beat into 7Ven, and take him inside the ring! ]
Heenan: The nWo is out cold, the rest of the Horsemen and The Darkside are backstage, and 7Ven is outnumbered 3 to 1!
[Arn Anderson DDT's 7Ven, and gives the 4 Horsemen sign to Flair, who 'Whoos' and applies the Figure Four! After applying the figure four for a minute or so, Flair relinquises the grip and grabs a mic. ]
Flair: Where's your leader NOW 7Ven? Huh? The Darkside just got their asses kicked, WCW style! WHOO!
[7Ven mutters something, but can't get the strength to say it loud enough. Flair puts the mic to his mouth. ]
Flair: What was that you piece of sh*t?
7Ven: I...said.... my leader...is right behind you...
Shiavone: Huh?
[Flair looks at Anderson in confusion, and they both turn around to see Sting holding the steel chair he was carrying before. Sting smiles at Flair and Arn, AND CRACKS THE CHAIR OVER FLAIR'S HEAD! Arn looks on in shock, but STING HITS HIM TOO!! ]
Shiavone: WHAT DID HE JUST DO?! WHAT DID HE JUST DO?!
Tenay: HOLY SH*T!!!
[Sting helps 7Ven to his feet, and they both laugh, before slamming Anderson and Flair AGAIN with vicious chairshots!]
Sting: Guess you chose the wrong partner, RIC. How does it feel to be on the other end of the beating? How does it feel to be betrayed?! I SHOULD KNOW! I SHOULD KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO BE BETRAYED BY YOUR BEST FRIENDS! LUGER, HOGAN, YOU! YOU THINK I'VE FORGOTTEN WHAT THE HORSEMEN DID TO ME ALL THOSE YEARS AGO? NO! I NEVER FORGET, I NEVER FORGIVE, I JUST GET REVENGE!
[Flair tries to get to his feet, but Sting just sends the chair on a collision course to Flair's head once more!]
Hudson: After victory in Wargames [still images from the Wargames match between The Darkside, The Horsemen and the nWo are shown on the television screens in the background], Ric Flair and The Horsemen were granted one chance at revenge, and a shot at ending The Darkside menace mere weeks after it was born. It was Ric Flair versus Sting for the WCW World Heavyweight Title, with the loser of the match forced to RETIRE. Let’s take you back.
Tony: Wait a minute…WAIT A MINUTE! LOOK! BEHIND STING! RIC FLAIR IS GETTING TO HIS FEET!
Hudson: And Sting doesn’t even know!
[The crowd notice this too, and cheering Flair on, as he uses the ropes to prop himself to his feet. As this is going on behind Sting, the masked man points at Sting again, and GRABS HIM BY THE THROAT!]
Tony: THE MASKED MAN HAS STING! AND HE’S….HE’S….HE’S PUSHING HIM OUT OF THE WAY?!
[The Masked Man throws Sting to one side, raises the bat and SLAMS IT OVER RIC FLAIR’S HEAD!]
Tony: NO! NO! NO!
Hudson: HE HIT FLAIR! HE HIT FLAIR! WHO WAS THAT?!
[Sting smiles at the Masked Man, and makes the cover, as Nick Patrick slowly makes his way there….]
Hudson: NOT LIKE THIS!
[Patrick makes the count….ONE…………..TWO…………………………THREE! STING WINS! WE’VE GOT A NEW WORLD CHAMPION!]
Tony: NO! AFTER MORE THAN 3 DECADES IN THIS SPORT, AFTER 14 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, RIC FLAIR’S CAREER IS OVER!
Hudson: AND IT CERTAINLY WASN’T NO FAIRYTALE ENDING!
Tony: BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR WCW? THE HORSEMEN HAVE FALLEN APART, AND THEIR LEADER HAS BEEN RETIRED!
Heenan: I was right. Of all the times…. Of all the things…. I was right. I know who’s under that mask gentlemen.
Hudson: What? Who?
Tony: I think we’re about to get our answer, because the New World Champion has the mic!
Sting: Well, it certainly was SHOWTIME TONIGHT!
[Crowd erupt in heat, as Nick Patrick checks on an unconscious Ric Flair.]
Sting: And it just wouldn’t have been the same without some special help from this man right here… You see, Arn Anderson told me that if any Darkside members interfered, I’d lose the match. So I was in a bind. I needed an insurance policy for this match, I KNOW Ric Flair, he’d pull out all the stops so I needed someone to make sure I’d retire his ass for good. So…. I turned to the next best thing…. A man who needed some direction…. THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE DARKSIDE……THE ‘DARK HORSE’ BOOKER T!
Tony: WHAT?!
Heenan: I was right. The baseball bat on Nitro? Sting pointing the bat at him on Thunder the week before?
[The camera zooms in on the masked man, who tears off the mask just as Sting finishes his spiel, to reveal, you guessed it, the UNITED STATES CHAMPION BOOKER T!]
Tenay: Former Horseman Booker T’s betrayal drove a knife through the heart of WCW. With Ric Flair retired, Goldberg gone and Commissioner Anderson brutalized post-match, WCW was in a perilous position. However, the very next night on Nitro, WCW’s chosen ones returned, thanks to a letter from Ted Turner himself.
Heenan: What I have here is a message from the OWNER OF TIME WARNER AND WCW….TED TURNER!
[The crowd pop huge for mention of Ted’s name, and Sting begins to look nervous.]
Sting: So? You think Ted Turner can stop us?! What’s he going to do? Fire us? We’ve got his two most important championships, he wouldn’t DARE.
Heenan: No, he’s not going to fire you, let me just read the message, it’ll make everything clearer. And I’ll do you a favour, I’ll skip down to the most important part, the rest is just him praising me for my work on Nitro.
Hudson: Hah!
Heenan: *clears his throat* ‘…and because of the injuries Arn Anderson sustained last night following the main event at Halloween Havoc, I am stripping him of his Commissioner position.’
[The crowd boo at this decision, but Heenan keeps talking.]
Heenan: ‘When Arn is healthy, we will welcome him back with open arms, but until then, WCW needs a NEW Commissioner. WCW needs a man of integrity, fairness and honesty like Double A. And as of the 30th of October 2000, WCW will get what it needs, because effective IMMEDIATELY, the NEW WCW Commissioner is…’
[Heenan adjusts the paper to read the name more clearly, much to the chagrin of the audience.]
Heenan: THE NATURE BOY, RIC FLAIR!!
Hudson: WHAT?!
[The crowd EXPLODE as Sting does a double-take, and tears the letter from Heenan’s hand, running through it at light-speed as the Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey BOOMS OVER THE ARENA, AND RIC FLAIR APPEARS ON THE ENTRANCE RAMP!]
Hudson: IT’S RIC FLAIR! RIC FLAIR IS THE NEW COMMISSIONER! I DON’T BELIEVE IT!
Styles: OH MY GOD!
Hudson: But the surprises didn’t stop there. New Commissioner Ric Flair introduced his first order of business, the re-hiring of three of WCW’s finest – Chris Benoit, Perry Saturn and Dean Malenko. But they weren’t just new hirings, they were new HORSEMEN.
Flair: I made some phone calls, I called in some favours, and SOMEHOW, SOME WAY, I brought back three of the best wrestlers this Nature Boy had seen! I brought back three men who were thrown away by the old WCW like TRASH. I brought back….The Horsemen. [Crowd pops] Sting, meet the men who will take WCW into the next century, meet the men who will take the Horsemen into the next century, meet the men who are going to RUN YOUR ASS RIGHT OUT OF WCW! MEET THE THREE NEWEST HORSEMEN – PERRY SATURN, DEAN MALENKO AND THE ‘CRIPPLER’ CHRIS BENOIT!
Hudson: HE DIDN’T!
[The crowd explode like MAD as Saturn, Malenko and Benoit appear beside Flair, wearing Horsemen Shirts and black jeans.]
Heenan: HE DID!
Styles: SATURN, MALENKO AND BENOIT, BACK IN WCW! I DON’T BELIEVE IT!
Hudson: Say it Joey!!
Styles: OH MY GOD!!
[Flair, Saturn, Malenko and Benoit give the Four Horsemen sign, and Sting and Booker take a step back, as the crowd pop like mad!]
Flair: Now, boys, GO KICK SOME ASS, HORSEMEN STYLE!
[Benoit, Malenko and Saturn charge the ring, as Sting and Booker try to escape.]
Hudson: AND THE DARKSIDE ARE HIGHTAILING IT OUT OF THERE!
Heenan: BUT BOOKER’S CAUGHT! BOOKER T IS CAUGHT!
[Booker T takes too long trying to escape, and the Horsemen pounce, dragging him away from the ropes and into the middle of the ring!]
Heenan: Now they’ve got him!
[Benoit, Malenko and Saturn unleash a flurry of offense on Booker, stomping and kicking him as Sting makes a getaway through the crowd. Saturn lifts Booker up, and Death Valley Driver’s him to a HUGE pop, then Benoit climbs the ropes and flattens Booker with a Diving Headbutt to another huge pop, followed by a Texas Cloverleaf from Malenko!!]
Hudson: DVD, DIVING HEADBUTT AND NOW THE CLOVERLEAF!! BOOKER T HAS BEEN DECIMATED! RIC FLAIR IS OUR NEW COMMISSIONER, AND THE HORSEMEN HAVE BEEN REFORMED!WHAT’S NEXT?!!!
Tenay: The new Horsemen wasted no time in making their mark on WCW. At the next pay-per-view, Mayhem, Chris Benoit challenged Sting for the World Heavyweight Title. Benoit was so close to finally ending Sting’s reign, but it was not to be. With a huge assist from a rope attached to the rafers, Sting stole a victory, almost crippling ‘The Crippler’ in the process!
[Sting hunches over, smiles at Benoit, then looks to the roof and waves his arm down.]
Heenan: It looks like he’s signaling for something?
Styles: What the hell?
[Sting reaches into the back of his tights, and pulls out a flap of material, complete with a metal hook. He pulls on the black rope to check its strength, then hooks it to his makeshift harness.]
Heenan: You know what he’s doing? He’s escaping!
[Sting gives a quick wave to Benoit, then pulls on the rope once more. A few moments later, the rope, and Sting, slowly begin to rise…]
Styles: You’re right Brain! But, he can’t do this?! Can he?
[As Sting slowly ascends, a now aware Benoit struggles to free himself from the ropes. Eventually, he lifts his entire body up, gripping the cage with his hands to pull himself to a standing position on the ropes. Sting is still being lifted, and is now a good eight feet off the ground. Soon, the rope swings Sting towards the cage itself, right where Benoit is waiting!]
Heenan: Sting doesn’t see Benoit!
[Benoit uses the cage, and the ring ropes, to walk towards the center of the cage, directly in line with Sting. Eventually, Sting sees Benoit, and pulls on the rope frantically, trying to get the attention of whomever is directing him out of the cage.]
Styles: But he does now!
Heenan: He’s petrified! Look at him!
[Sting inches closer and closer to Benoit, whose gaze is focused squarely on the hovering Sting. Once Sting reaches Benoit’s desired point, Benoit LEAPS off the cage, and wraps his arms around Sting’s legs! Instantly, both Sting and Benoit lower a good 5 feet. A few moments later, the operator corrects the mistake, and the rope quickly jolts up. Sting frantically tries to kick Benoit off, but Benoit’s grip is unrelenting.]
Styles: That rope can’t hold them both! We’ve already seen one superstar sent to the hospital, are we going to see two more?!
[The rope raises higher and higher, until it is well over the height of the cage. Now, it concentrates on moving OVER the cage itself, traveling towards the entrance ramp. It almost completes its objective, however Chris Benoit’s feet HIT the top of the cage, stopping both men from leaving!]
Styles: And look at Benoit! His feet are gripping the top of the cage! He’s not letting Sting leave!
[However, Benoit’s grip is only temporary, as Sting eventually manages to kick him off, causing Benoit to land, double over, ON TOP of the thick steel of the cage’s top supports! Now free from Benoit’s grasp, Sting floats over the top of the cage.]
Heenan: All he’s got to do is drop and he’s won this match!
[Sting is slowly lowered down, until he is face to face with the hunched over Benoit. Benoit raises his head, glaring at Sting with glazed over eyes. Sting gives Benoit a wide grin, then FLOORS HIM WITH A RIGHT HAND, SENDING BENOIT CRASHING 12 FEET BACKWARDS ONTO THE CANVAS!]
Styles: OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! CHRIS BENOIT HAS BEEN DECIMATED!
Heenan: STING’S WON IT!
Styles: And Sting STEALS another victory! Can NOBODY stop The Darkside?!
Hudson: And that wasn’t the only shocker. Directly after that match, Eric Bischoff made his unexpected return to WCW, assuming his former role as WCW President and removing Ric Flair from the Commissioner-ship!
Bischoff: What type of man are you Flair? Willing to sacrifice the bodies of your Horsemen and the other WCW superstars just to fulfill your vendetta against Sting? Is that the type of man we want running WCW? No. WCW needs someone who can’t put their personal quest for vengeance behind them. WCW needs someone not BLINDED by their hatred for Sting. Ric, what I’m trying to say is….
[Bischoff pauses, and takes a slow breath.]
Bischoff: You’re fired.
Styles: WHAT?
[The crowd rock in heat, as Bischoff tries not to stare Flair directly in the eyes.]
Bischoff: I’m sorry. Tomorrow on Nitro, I will assume complete control of WCW. Ric, you can still manage the Horsemen, but effective immediately, you’re no longer the Commissioner. It’s over.
Tenay: With Bischoff in charge, the fight to Darkside was taken to the next level. The very next night on Nitro, Bischoff shocked the world by naming the Human Wrecking Machine Tazz as Sting’s opponent at Starrcade!
Hudson: But Mike, that wasn’t the only shocker. Diamond Dallas Page made his return to WCW that night, and was put into a match with Tazz in Nitro’s main event. And at the conclusion of that match, after Tazz was disqualified due to interference from Lance Storm, WCW’s last hope returned.
[DDP and Storm brawl outside the ring and INTO the crowd, while Mike Awesome checks on Tazz, who is leaning on the ropes.]
Styles: DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE HAS RETURNED WITH A BANG IN HIS FIRST MATCH BACK! AFTER MONTHS ON THE SIDELINE, HE’S TAKEN THE FIGHT TO THE SECOND WAVE! WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN ON THUND-
Heenan: HOLD IT JOHNNY! HOLD IT! DON’T HIT THE CREDITS! LOOK! LOOK!
[The camera does a quick, awkward pan to the left, away from Tazz and Awesome and to the entrance ramp to the sight of….
GOLDBERG!!!!!]
Styles: OH MY GOD!
Heenan: IT’S THE MAN! IT’S GOLDBERG!
Tenay: WHAT IS HE DOING OUT HERE?!
[The crowd go OFF THE HOOK as Goldberg charges to the ring and delivers a BONE SHATTERING SPEAR TO MIKE AWESOME!]
Tenay: AWESOME’S DOWN!
Heenan: AND THERE’S ONLY ONE LEFT!
[Tazz, still groggy and still leaning, back turned, on the turnbuckle, hears the crowd’s massive roar, and turns around to meet a MASSIVE SPEAR FROM GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG LIFTS HIM UP, HOLDS HIM AND THEN DROPS HIM WITH THE JACKHAMMER!]
Styles: GOLDBERG HAS CLEARED THE RING! THE SECOND WAVE HAS BEEN CRUSHED! BUT WHY IS HE HERE?!
[Goldberg gives a scream for the crowd, and then grabs a microphone off David Penzer. The crowd are still on fire, and take a good thiry seconds to quiet down to allow Goldberg to speak.]
Goldberg: IS THAT YOUR MAN BISCHOFF? [Points to the unconscious body of Tazz] IS THAT THE MAN YOU THINK CAN WIN BACK THE WORLD TITLE? WELL, YOU MIGHTN’T HAVE NOTICED, BUT HE JUST GOT JACKHAMMERED BACK TO PHILADELPHIA!
[Crowd EXPLODE!]
Goldberg: AND AS FOR YOU STING, I HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN. WHETHER IT’S NEXT WEEK ON NITRO, AT STARRCADE OR IN THE PARKING LOT LIKE YOUR BOY DANIELS, YOU’RE GOING TO PAY. BECAUSE STING – YOU’RE NEXT!!!!
Tenay: And with those two words, WCW found their nuclear weapon in the war against the Darkside. Over the next few weeks, Goldberg would defeat Tazz for the #1 Contendership, struggle with a neck injury that by all rights should have kept him on the shelf and then last Monday on Nitro… Goldberg showed Sting just how far he would go to destroy the Darkside.
Hudson: First, he brought an oblivious Lex Luger to Nitro. Then – he kidnapped him. But it was only in the final moments of Nitro that Goldberg revealed his masterplan. Either Sting put up his World Title at Starrcade, or Sting’s best friend Lex Luger gets destroyed.
Tenay: It was a side of Goldberg we’d never seen before, a vicious streak never unleashed before. He was willing to take out an innocent man in order to get what he wanted, and well.. I’ll let the footage speak for itself.
Goldberg: There doesn’t have to be a sacrifice tonight Sting. I don’t have to do anything to Luger. To be honest, I like the guy. Which is why, I’m giving you an out. A chance to stop all this, right here, right now.
[Sting turns his head slightly, taking an interest in what Goldberg has to say. Goldberg looks down at the clipboard on the canvas, and kicks it out of the ring, towards Sting.]
Tenay: What’s on the clipboard?
Goldberg: Pick that up. There’s your out Sting. It’s a formal contract, saying that in our match at Starrcade, you put the World Heavyweight Championship on the line.
[The crowd cheer, as Sting sneers again. The camera cuts to Eric Bischoff, who looks VERY interested in Goldberg’s offer.]
Styles: Oh my!
Tenay: So that’s what this is about! Goldberg wants the World Title!
Heenan: But the World Title is what keeps the Darkside afloat! It’s why Bischoff can’t just fire Sting! He knows where it will end up! If Sting loses the title, that’s it!
[Sting can’t take his eyes off the contract.]
Goldberg: Sign it.
[Sting looks up at Goldberg, who smiles, then tightens his grip on Luger’s neck. Luger is semi-conscious now, and gasps for air.]
Goldberg: Sign it.
[Sting looks around at the crowd, some of whom are chanting ‘KILL LUGER!’. He grabs the pen from the top of the clipboard and…
Signs the contract!!]
Styles: He signed it! Sting and Goldberg for the World Title at Starrcade! OH MY GOD!
[Goldberg’s grin is as wide as his face, as Sting throws the clipboard onto the ground, disgusted with what he just did.]
Tenay: Goldberg found Sting’s weak point, and he exploited it!
Goldberg: Good boy.
[Goldberg relinquishes his grip on Luger and stands up. There is a clear path between he and Sting. Goldberg looks down at Luger, then back up at Sting.]
Goldberg: So, you coming to get your buddy, or what?
[Goldberg’s grin widens, as he rolls Luger towards the ropes, tempting Sting to enter the ring. The RABID crowd are almost begging Sting to enter, especially the ones adjacent to the entrance ramp. Sting ignores them, looks at Luger and…
Turns around and begins walking to the back!]
Styles: Sting just turned his back on his best friend!
Heenan: He called Goldberg’s bluff! I think he’s right too, Goldberg isn’t going to lay a hand on Luger! He got what he wanted, and that’s all…
[The Brain’s explanation of why Goldberg won’t lay a hand on Luger is interrupted by Goldberg laying his hand on Lex Luger.]
Heenan: Oh.
[In a show of strength, Goldberg drags Luger to his feet, by the hair. The crowd cheer and Sting, who can see this on the FlairTron staring him in the face, stops in his tracks.]
Goldberg: I don’t think you understood me.
[Sting sneers again, as Goldberg turns Luger over, and hooks him in position for the Jackhammer!!]
Tenay: He’s not going to! Is he?!
Goldberg: STING!
[Sting is motionless. He’s not even looking at the FlairTron anymore, instead his expressionless face stares ahead at the curtains. Goldberg slowly nods his head, and drops the microphone. As he hooks Luger’s arm over his head, the mic picks up his final words. ‘I’m sorry, Arn.’. Sting hears this, and turns his head slightly. The crowd go absolutely INSANE as Goldberg hoists Luger up… and DROPS HIM WITH AN EARTH-SHATTERING JACKHAMMER!]
Styles: OH MY GOD! GOLDBERG JUST CRUSHED STING’S BEST FRIEND!
Tenay: I don’t believe it!!
Heenan: He compromised! I knew it! This is great!
Tenay: GREAT?
Heenan: If he can compromise himself, imagine how much compromising he’s going to do to Sting at Starrcade!!
Styles: I can’t believe what I just saw!
[Goldberg stares down at the fallen body of Lex Luger, then at Sting. Finally, Sting turns around, and locks eyes on Goldberg. For a fleeting moment, we almost see a look of fear in Sting’s face, for the true Goldberg, has been unleashed.]
Styles: BILL GOLDBERG HAS GOT HIS TITLE SHOT AT STARRCADE, BUT AT WHAT PRICE?! HE’S THE FINAL HOPE OF WCW, AND I DON’T EVEN RECOGNISE HIM ANYMORE! WHAT HAS HE DONE?! AND WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR STARRCADE ON SUNDAY?!
Hudson: And that is where are now. WCW’s war with the Darkside has consumed this company for months, from the first day of WCW’s rebirth until now. And this Sunday at Starrcade, with the Darkside putting every single one of their titles on the line, WCW has its greatest shot EVER of ending this war once and for all. Christopher Daniels vs Rey Mysterio Jr for the Cruiserweight Title, Wrath and Mortis vs The Horsemen for the Tag Team title, Booker T versus Scott Steiner for the United States title and of course, the big one. Sting puts his World Title on the line against the unstoppable Goldberg!
Tenay: With so many matches, so many variables and so much volatility, nobody can predict what will happen at Starrcade. But we will guarantee you this. One way or another – the war will end this Sunday. It’s just a matter of who will be left standing. For Scott Hudson and the entire WCW broadcast team, I’ll see you on Sunday!
